Science in the Bible
Despite a common belief that science and Scripture are at odds with each
other, those of us who believe that God is the creator of this world also
believe by extension that he is the creator of the science of this world. His
Word, the Bible, backs up this belief. Many aspects of science are given in
God’s word, showing that science and scripture are in harmony. It is only
atheistic religion masquerading as science, such as evolution, that is contrary
to scripture. But evolution is in the Bible, too. We’ll get to that shortly, but
first, let’s look at some of the science in the Bible.
The science of hydrology (the study of the distribution of water): Ecclesiastes
1:7, “All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place
from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.” Isaiah 55:10, “For as
the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but
watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to
the sower, and bread to the eater.”
Evaporation: Psalm 135:7, “He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the
earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his
treasuries.” Jeremiah 10:13, “When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude
of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of
the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of
his treasures.”
Condensation: Job 26:8, “He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the
cloud is not rent under them.” Job 37:11, “Also by watering he wearieth the
thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud.”
Precipitation: Job 36:27-28, “For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour
down rain according to the vapour thereof; which the clouds do drop and distil
upon man abundantly.”
Oceanic Waves: Psalm 33:7, “He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an
heap; he layeth up the depth in storehouses.”
Erosion: Job 14:19, “The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things
which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.”
The law of cause and effect: Job 4:8, “Even as I have seen, they that plow
iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.” Galatians 6:7, “Be not deceived;
God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
The shape of the earth for years was considered to be flat, and apparently some
people still believe that it is. But we find its true shape in Isaiah 40:22, “It
is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth…”
The first law of thermodynamics states (in layman’s terms) that energy cannot be
created or destroyed; rather, the amount of energy lost in a steady process
cannot be greater than the amount of energy gained. You can find this law in
many texts, including: Ecclesiastes 1:9-10, “The thing that hath been, it is
that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and
there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said,
See, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us.”
Ecclesiastes 3:14-15, “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever:
nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it: and God doeth it, that men
should fear before him. That which hath been is now; and that which is to be
hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.” Nehemiah 9:6, “Thou,
even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with
all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, and thou preservest
them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.”
The second law of thermodynamics states that energy systems have a tendency to
increase their entropy (the inevitable and steady deterioration of a system).
This is the exact opposite of what evolutionists claim, because they assert that
energy systems have increased and improved over time. As I told you in the
introduction, evolution is in the Bible. The catch is that it is not showing
that evolution is correct, but rather predicting that people would choose to
believe a lie like evolution. You’ll see this in 2 Peter 3:3-7. Peter tells us
that scoffers in the last days will prefer to follow their own lusts rather than
the word of God. They will say that things continue as always, and they are
willingly ignorant of 1) the creation (“by the word of God the heavens were of
old”), 2) the effects of the flood on the earth (“the earth standing out of the
water and in the water”), and 3) judgment (“the day of judgment and perdition
[destruction] of ungodly men”). Doesn’t that sound like an evolutionist to you?
They deny that God created the earth and all that is in it, they don’t
understand the effect of the earth having been under water for a period of time,
and they deny that God will return to judge them.
Make no mistake about it: the Bible supports true science, but will never
support a false science. Stay tuned for my next column, which will look at more
science that supports Scripture.
